Dos and Don’ts for Bathroom Renovations

Dos and Don’ts for Bathroom Renovations

A bathroom renovation is a big project to take on and can become overwhelming for some people. The good thing is there are a few steps you can you take to ensure your bathroom renovation takes on the transformation you have envisaged.

Let’s start with research and inspiration. It’s important to have some idea as to what style, colours and features you would like in your new bathroom. Jump on Google, Pinterest, Instagram or wherever else might give you inspiration, as there are many different design options out there. While doing this it’s important to remember that you don’t have to adhere to one design. This is your bathroom, you can take inspiration from multiple designs and bring them together to make it your own.

Set yourself a budget, not only for the renovation but any unforeseen issues that may arise. While on the surface everything may seem straight forward, once demolition starts you might find it reveals a nasty surprise like mould or termites. This is when you’ll be thanking yourself for that little extra emergency money.

Lighting can make or break any room but is especially important in the bathroom. While artificial lighting is a must, natural light is also a big win in a bathroom. Most bathrooms don’t allow for large windows or they are often placed in the wrong position to correctly capture the light. If this is the case consider a skylight. Skylights not only let in an abundance of natural light, they add wow factor to your bathroom.

We touched on budget earlier and it is a big factor, so is ensuring allocate your budget in the right places and one of those places is labour. There’s one simple rule to remember, a rock bottom quote, does not mean you will get a top dollar finish. Skilled and experienced trades aren’t cheap for a good reason. Not only do you want to ensure your trades are skilled at what they do they also need to be well-versed in the Australian Building Regulations and Codes and Standards.

Another aspect of budget control is your timeline expectations. Ensure you take the time to consider and consult with the right people about your bathroom. Don’t jump on a quote just because they’ve offered you a shorter timeframe, quicker doesn’t mean better. Each process of a bathroom renovation takes time when done correctly.

Quality of finishes and availability of storage are two end game results that you want to ensure you get right. Allocating enough of your budget to these items will ensure you don’t regret your choices later on. You need to think about the quality of the things you will use and touch daily. Think about how you will use the bathroom and where and what needs to be stored within it.

Renovating any part of your house can be a big project, however bathrooms are one of the biggest, so you want to ensure you get it right. If you can remember these few basic guidelines, this will put you in a good place of nailing your renovation.
